Making a 21-Strand Mohair cinch

Learn more about crafting your own long-lasting mohair cinch.

If you are the type of person who enjoys making your horse gear, cinches are one item that might be on your list. Cinches are not overly complicated to tie and they can be tied in many different designs. It’s important to realize that they are also very important items. They attach your saddle to the horse. If it breaks, you’re in trouble. If you can’t handle this responsibility, there are plenty of other items you can make. On the other hand, if you are ok with the risk and responsibility, a good mohair cinch will last for years to come.

The 21-strand cinch is not a bad one to be familiar with. For simple riding outdoors, it is a good option. Mostly, they offer more area than a 17-strand cinch. This distributes the pressure over a wider area, making it more comfortable for your horse. I also favor the round buckles and believe they are more comfortable for the horse. The 21-strand is about the most you can get on a round buckle.

For those of you interested in the details of this cinch, here they are.

  • This cinch is 36” long.

  • The 8-strand mohair cord (the body cord) is 70’ long.

  • The cord for the first row on the end design is 8’.

  • The cord for the second row on the end design is 6’.

  • The cord for the top row on the end design is 4’.

  • The center bar cord is 24’.

Keep in mind, any of these measurements can change depending on how you build your cinch. Still, it should give you a starting place if you are interested in making your own. If you are a horse person, it’s a good traditional skill to be familiar with. Not only can you get a high-quality cinch for a cheaper price, but you can also customize it and make it how you want.
